The Star-Spangled Banner ist seit dem 3. März 1931 die offizielle Nationalhymne der USA.
Den Text “The Star-Spangled Banner” schrieb Francis Scott Key am 14. September 1814. Der Grund für seine Aufzeichnungen war seine Erleichterung darüber, dass am Tag nach den britischen Angriffen auf Fort McHenry bei Baltimore noch immer die amerikanische Flagge wehte.
Die Melodie stammt vom englischen Trinklied um 1800 “To Anacreon in Heaven” von John Stafford Smith. Ab 1916 spieten die amerikanischen Militärkapellen auf Weisung von Präsident Woodrow zu festlichen Anlässen dieses Lied. Im Jahr 1931 wurde es zur Nationalhymne.
Bei offiziellen Anlässen wird normalerweise nur die erste Strophe des Star-Spangled Banner gesungen.
